Updates:

Most travelers leave Reykjavík heading north and disappear straight into the Hvalfjörður Tunnel on their way to Borgarnes, Snæfellsnes or the Westfjords.

Just 40 minutes from Reykjavík lies one of Iceland's most underrated regions: Hvalfjörður, or "Whale Fjord." Instead of rushing through the tunnel, take the old coastal road around the fjord and discover dramatic mountains, waterfalls, hidden beaches, local farms, historic sites and some of the best hot springs in Iceland.

Whether you're looking for a relaxing day trip, a scenic detour or an overnight escape close to the capital, Hvalfjörður delivers.

1. Hvaleyrarviti

Start your adventure at Hvaleyrarviti, a charming lighthouse perched on the edge of the fjord.

The area offers peaceful walking paths, beautiful coastal views and a quiet beach where you can enjoy the fresh sea air. It's a perfect first stop and a reminder that some of Iceland's best places don't require a long drive.

2. The Beached Whalers of Hvalfjörður

One of the fjord's most unusual attractions is the collection of abandoned whaling vessels resting along the shoreline.

These rusting ships tell the story of Iceland's whaling history and create a striking contrast against the surrounding mountains and calm waters. Photographers especially love this stop for its unique atmosphere.

3. Glymur Waterfall

No visit to Hvalfjörður is complete without seeing Glymur.

At 198 meters (650 ft), Glymur is one of Iceland's tallest waterfalls and was long considered the tallest in the country. The hike to the waterfall is one of the most rewarding near Reykjavík, leading through a dramatic canyon with stunning views along the way.

Allow several hours for the hike and make sure to wear proper footwear.

4. Farm Shops & Local Flavors

One of the highlights of visiting Hvalfjörður is supporting local farms.

We recommend stopping at Bjarteyjarsandur Farm or Háls í Kjós, where you can often find locally produced meats, grass-fed beef, homemade treats and Icelandic products.

Opening hours can be limited and seasonal, so check ahead before your visit.

5. Hvammsvík Hot Springs

After a day of exploring, reward yourself with a soak at Hvammsvík.

Located directly on the shoreline, these geothermal pools blend seamlessly into the fjord landscape. Depending on the tide, the experience changes throughout the day, and adventurous visitors can even enjoy a cold plunge in the Atlantic Ocean between soaks.

Many travelers consider Hvammsvík one of Iceland's most beautiful hot spring experiences.
