Stóragjá Cave

Reykjahlið

GET DIRECTIONS

Stóragjá is a hidden gem in North Iceland, featuring a rift that contains a cave filled with naturally heated geothermal water. Located near the village of Reykjahlið, close to the famous Lake Mývatn, it’s often overshadowed by the more well-known Grótagjá cave, which gained fame from Game of Thrones. Despite this, Stóragjá is definitely worth a visit and attracts far fewer visitors.

To access the stunning azure waters, visitors must carefully navigate a narrow ravine and climb into the cave using ropes and carved steps. However, bathing in Stóragjá is strongly discouraged due to the presence of harmful algae, which gives the water its vibrant blue color. Additionally, the lack of filtration has resulted in unhealthy bacteria.
