The Hvannagil track is a gravel road running through the scenic Hvannagil valley near the Lónsöræfi region, following the vast and striking riverbed of Jökulsá í Lóni. Popular among hikers, it leads to the trailheads of the golden Hvannagil valley and continues deeper into the highlands as a rough dirt track.
There are no river crossings in the initial section, and most 2WD vehicles can reach the first hiking area (Hvannagil Golden Valley Hike) during summer. However, beyond the unofficial car park, the road becomes significantly rougher, requiring a 4×4 or even a super jeep for deeper exploration. Like many mountain tracks in Iceland, Hvannagil is not an official F-road, meaning it’s more demanding and often not covered by standard rental insurance. Always confirm coverage and only attempt the route with experience on rugged Icelandic terrain.
