The Hekla track is a challenging offshoot from F225 (Landmannaleið), leading adventurers close to the summit of the iconic Hekla volcano. While it doesn't involve river crossings, the route features steep, uneven terrain and a dangerously sharp final ascent—making it one of Iceland's steepest and most technical drives.
This is not an official F-road but a rough mountain track, requiring at minimum a large 4×4 like a Land Cruiser, though a super jeep with high clearance is strongly recommended. The route is not covered by most rental insurances and should only be attempted by experienced drivers comfortable with difficult highland conditions.
