Just a 30-minute drive southeast of Reykjavík, Vífilsfell stands at 655 meters (2,148 feet) and offers a rewarding hike with panoramic views of the capital region and beyond.
The hike begins with a gradual ascent through grassy fields, leading to steeper, rocky sections. As you approach the summit, some scrambling is required, with fixed ropes in place to assist hikers. The trail is marked at regular intervals, but caution is advised, especially on the steep scree slopes and tuff rock surfaces.
At the summit, a viewing dial installed by the Icelandic Touring Association provides a 360° panorama. On clear days, you can see landmarks such as Grótta, Esja, Móskarðshnúkar, Skjaldbreiður, and Hengill.
From Reykjavík, take Route 1 (Suðurlandsvegur) towards Hveragerði and Selfoss. After passing the sign for Bláfjöll skiing area, take the next right turn and follow the road until you reach the parking area near the base of the mountain.
Vífilsfell offers a blend of geological interest and stunning vistas, making it a worthwhile excursion for those looking to explore Iceland's natural beauty close to the capital.
