A Place Shaped by History

Grunnavík was once a thriving settlement, but the last inhabitants left in 1962. This marked the final end of permanent settlement in the Jökulfjörður area. Today, the abandoned sites tell the story of life in one of Iceland’s most isolated regions.

The bay is dominated by Maríuhorn, a 350-meter-high mountain that gives Grunnavík its strong and rugged character. The old church at Stað in Grunnavík stands as a reminder of earlier times, along with the deserted settlements of Naust, Nes, Oddsflöt, and Faxastaðir scattered throughout the valley.

Cultural Heritage

In the 19th century, Stað in Grunnavík was home to a priest named Hannes Arnórsson. His life and work are described in Friðrik Eggerz’s book Úr fylgsnum fyrri aldar, adding cultural depth to the area’s history.
