Nestled in the heart of Iceland’s highlands, the Landmannalaugar Campsite sits amidst the colorful rhyolite mountains and Laugahraun lava field. It offers tent and campervan spaces on gravel, close to hot springs, toilets, a service hut, and optional showers (for a fee)

Getting There by 4×4

Access is only possible via high-clearance 4×4 vehicles on F-roads during summer (typically mid‑June to mid‑September)

Route Options:

1. Easiest (F26 + F208 North): Minimal river crossings; from Route 1 via F26 to F208, ending with a short walk across a pedestrian bridge—about 5 minutes to the campsite
2. Scenic (F225 West): Enters via Þjórsárdalur; includes several small streams to cross—more adventurous and slower
3. Challenging (F208 South): Multiple river crossings; best suited for experienced drivers in robust 4×4s and offers dramatic highland views

Note: Parking reservations are required between June 20 and September 15, 8 AM–3 PM .

Campsite Features

• Gravel pitches—rock anchors provided for tents; ground can be too hard for pegs
• Pay-per-person fee (~3,200 ISK + 1,000 ISK for shower) for campers and day visitors
• Toilets, potable water, outdoor grills, benches, and a service hut with warden staff
• Mountain hut sleeps 78 and includes bunks, kitchen, running water, showers, and toilets (book ahead via FÍ)

Hot Spring & Hiking

Relax at the natural hot spring (≈36–40°C) next to the campsite—a perfect post-hike soak

The site is also the trailhead for iconic hikes like Brennisteinsalda, Bláhnjúkur, and the start of the Laugavegur Trail

Tips & Safety

• Always check the weather and conditions before driving F-roads using road.is, vedur.is, and safetravel.is
• Even “easy” routes involve gravel terrain and potential river crossings—use caution and drive slow
• Bring enough food, fuel (last fill-up near Hrauneyjar or Selfoss), and camping gear—no shops or services on-site
• Secure your tent with rocks—highland winds can be fierce
