Flatey Island

A small, peaceful island in Westfjords. Its name means “Flat Island,” and it’s named for its largely level landscape — about 2 km long and 1 km wide.

Flatey is the largest island in the Breiðafjörður archipelago and one of the few that still has a year-round population, though only a handful of people live there outside summer.

The island is known for its well-preserved old village with colourful traditional houses, a historic church with painted interiors, and Iceland’s oldest library.

Flatey also offers excellent birdwatching and nature experiences, with many seabird species nesting nearby. It’s typically reached by ferry from Stykkishólmur or Brjánslækur in summer, and its calm, historic atmosphere makes it a unique stop on a West Iceland/Westfjords itinerary.
