The Strútur Track is a rugged dirt trail branching off the F210 just west of Mælifell. It leads directly to the Strútur Hut and Campsite, nestled in the remote highlands of Iceland.
Road Conditions & Challenges
Type: This is not an F-road but a true dirt track—rougher and less maintained
Terrain: Expect sandy stretches with patches of hard rock and a number of river crossings, including a 100 m stretch driven within the riverbed for a medium-sized crossing
Markers: The route is marked by yellow poles indicating the safest path across the riverbed—never stray off these markers!

Vehicle Requirements
A large 4×4 with high ground clearance is mandatory
Use low-gear, engage 4×4, and lock differentials when crossing water
Ensure your rental insurance covers true off-road tracks, as this is more difficult than standard F-roads.

Key Safety Tips
Follow the designated tire tracks—the surrounding sand is soft, and straying off may easily result in getting stuck
Drive slowly through rivers, stick to the course marked by yellow poles, and avoid test-driving new paths—the riverbed may be deceptive
