Þingvellir Leirar Campsite

Location & Campground Layout

• Leirar is one of the main camping areas within Þingvellir National Park, divided into four sub-sites:
  • Nyrðri-Leirar: closest to the Service Centre; best for campervans and tents.
  • Syðri-Leirar: across the road from Nyrðri; accessible for both tents and campers.
  • Vatnskot: quieter, tents-only area.‍

Opening Seasons

• Summer (June 1 – September 15/1): All Leirar campgrounds are open with full amenities like electricity.
• Autumn (from mid-September): Only Nyrðri-Leirar remains open.
• Winter (November to spring): Camping continues only at Nyrðri-Leirar; showers may be closed during freezing months.

Facilities

• Service huts at Nyrðri-Leirar and Syðri-Leirar include restrooms, outdoor cooking sinks, and brick ovens for grilling. Showers are usually available during open seasons.‍
• Nyrðri-Leirar has laundry facilities and a service centre nearby. In winter, showers may be closed (Dec–Apr).‍
• The Service Centre offers café snacks, maps, and permits. It operates from 09:00–18:00 (summer) and 09:00–17:00 (winter).
