F208 North, also known as Fjallabaksleið Nyrðri North, is the more accessible half of the F208 Highland route. It connects the southern end of F26 (Sprengisandsleið) with Landmannalaugar (F224), Iceland’s crown jewel of geothermal beauty.

Road Conditions

This section is considered easier than its southern counterpart. While still a mountain road, no river crossings and milder terrain, making it more manageable for confident drivers with 4x4 vehicles. Expect gravel, potholes, uneven terrain, narrow lanes, and steep drop-offs. Despite being less technical, always check road.is for current conditions.

Scenic Highlights

Travelers are treated to a surreal landscape:

• Landmannalaugar’s rhyolite mountains glowing in shades of red, yellow, and green.
• Expansive lava fields
• The serene lakes of Frostastaðavatn and Bláhylur (Blue Lake)—perfect for photography.

Don’t miss a detour to Sigöldufoss and Sigöldugljúfur (Valley of Tears)—a series of small waterfalls flowing through a lush mossy canyon.

• Bláhylur (Blue Lake): Also known as Hnausapollur, Bláhylur is a striking volcanic crater lake with vivid blue waters, easily accessible from F208 and popular among photographers and nature enthusiasts.

• Sigöldufoss: A picturesque waterfall located near the F208 route, Sigöldufoss is known for its serene beauty and the contrast of the cascading water against the rugged terrain.​

• Sigöldugljúfur (Valley of Tears): This canyon, often referred to as the Valley of Tears, is renowned for its numerous small waterfalls cascading down moss-covered cliffs into a turquoise river below, creating a magical and tranquil atmosphere.

• Ófærufoss: Located within the Eldgjá canyon, Ófærufoss is a unique two-tiered waterfall that once featured a natural stone bridge, which collapsed in the 1990s. The waterfall remains a stunning natural attraction, showcasing the dynamic geological activity of the region.
