Nestled in a lava field along the F206 road, Blágil is a remote campsite and mountain hut situated about 15 km south of the Laki volcanic craters, part of the Vatnajökull National Park. Due to several unbridged river crossings, only high-clearance 4×4 vehicles can safely reach the site.
Highlights & Facilities
- Mountain hut sleeps up to 18 people in bunk-style sleeping bag accommodations. Guests must bring their own sleeping gear
- Shared kitchen and dining area, heated with gas—a cozy spot after a long day of hiking (Hut guests only)
- Outdoor camping area next to the hut, with cold water taps, basic toilets, and showers available for a fee (~500 ISK)
- Dogs are welcome if kept on a leash.
- Campers can explore scenic walking trails around Laka, and during summer, educational hikes are guided by park staff from nearby Laka Visitor Centre.
Location & Access
- Found along the F206 mountain road, which is only open from late June to early September when weather allows
- Blágil is often part of the F207 Laki loop, offering immersive views of volcanic ridges and lava fields—the F207 connects back to F206 and loops around the crater zone.
Why Choose Blágil?
- True highland seclusion: Set against moss-covered lava and volcanic ridges, this site offers solitude few places can match
- Raw natural beauty: The landscapes here were forged by the historic Laki eruption of 1783, offering dramatic geological vistas and peaceful solitude.
- Ideal for hikers: Blágil makes a perfect stopping point before or after tackling the Lakagígar trail or other Vatnajökull National Park routes.
- Basic comfort in the wild: The mountain hut, kitchen space, and optional hot shower balance ruggedness and comfort.
Important Notes Before You Go
- 4×4 required: Vehicles need good clearance to manage river crossings and uneven terrain
- Limited services: There’s cold drinking water and restrooms, but no electricity or shop—arrive prepared.
- Seasonal opening: Only open during summer months when the F-roads are accessible. Double-check road status before driving.
- Reservations: Recommended for the hut, though campsite access is generally flexible. Booking available via Skaftárstofa Visitor Center
